Questions & Answers

On cellular activators ...

  • What are cellular activators?
  • Cellular activators are natural proteins in the human body. Their job is to stimulate the renewal and specialization of cells, each having their own unique function.
  • What is EGF?
  • EGF stands for Epidermal Growth Factor. EGF is a cellular activator produced by the epidermal cells for maintenance of the skin. The EGF contained in the BIOEFFECT serum is a natural replica of human EGF especially produced in barley via patent pending biotechnological methods.
  • Is EGF scientifically proven to work?
  • Yes. Apart from a wealth of scientific literature documenting the vital role of EGF in the internal renewal processes of skin cells, studies on users of the BIOEFFECT EGF Serum show a substantial increase in skin moisture and elasticity and a reduction in visible fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Is the BIOEFFECT EGF Serum the first skincare product to contain EGF cellular activator?
  • There are other products on the market which contain EGF cellular activator, however BIOEFFECT's groundbreaking serum is the first cosmetic product to contain EGF made in plants. In other products the EGF is grown in E.coli bacteria or in animal cells. Production of EGF in barley ensures that it is void of bacterial endotoxins, human infectious agents and other potential contaminations associated with conventional production hosts. This revolutionary green technology - which took more than 10 years in development - means it is possible to use a pure and more effective cellular activator in the serum, in turn optimising the positive effect on the skin.

On efficacy and use ...

  • How long does it take for the BIOEFFECT EGF Serum to work?
  • BIOEFFECT EGF Serum has an immediate positive effect, however visible results depend on age and the general condition of the skin. After just a few days most users notice changes such as inceased glow and more even skin tone. Over an extended period the serum begins to show visible signs of exerting its effect on deeper layers of the skin. Fine lines begin to diminish, wrinkles show signs of smoothing and skin appears more plump and radiant. Within a month most users report a noticable and very satisfactory difference.
  • When should I apply the BIOEFFECT EGF Serum?
  • For optimal results, apply BIOEFFECT EGF Serum onto clean skin in the evening.
  • Is BIOEFFECT EGF Serum suitable for all types of skin?
  • The formulation of the BIOEFFECT EGF Serum was specifically designed to maintain and stimulate the activity of the EGF cellular activator, independent of skin type. Studies reveal that the serum has an equally excellent impact on all types of skin, including even the most sensitive.
  • If I use the BIOEFFECT EGF Serum at night, do I need to apply a night cream afterwards?
  • No. BIOEFFECT EGF Serum is a superlative moisturiser in its own right. It is possible that fatty substances in traditional night creams might reduce the efficacy of the EGF cellular activator, so we strongly recommend against using any simultaneous product.
  • Can I put make-up over the BIOEFFECT EGF Serum?
  • It is fine to use make-up over the serum, but ideally we recommend using the serum at night before bed so that skin can rest while it is being revitalized.
  • What should I use with the BIOEFFECT EGF Serum?
  • We recommend using the BIOEFFECT EGF Serum as a nourishing night treatment and suggest users continue to use their choice of other skin care products during the day.
  • Can I apply the BIOEFFECT EGF Serum anywhere on my body?

  • How long will the BIOEFFECT EGF Serum last?
  • If the serum is applied on the face and neck once a day, a 15 ml vial (the larger vial) should last about three months. You can expect a 4.5 ml vial to last about one month with regular use.
  • Is the BIOEFFECT EGF Serum moisturising?
  • Yes. The combined effect of the EGF cellular activator and hyalunoric acid results in a complete moisturising, nourishing and softening treatment. Using another moisturiser cream after BIOEFFECT EGF Serum is unnecessary and can even be detrimental. BIOEFFECT EGF Serum is particularly beneficial for dry and sensitive skin and numerous users have reported that their dry spots diminish as skin becomes more fully hydrated.
  • How does BIOEFFECT EGF Serum work on wrinkles?
  • EGF serum accelerates cellular renewal, stimulating the production of intercellular substances such as collagen and elastin. Wrinkles appear to diminish as the skin becomes more resilient and better hydrated, regaining more youthful vitality.
  • Does the BIOEFFECT EGF Serum help get rid of bags under the eyes?
  • Many users report that the hydrating effect of the serum means sagging under the eyes is reduced and dark circles dramatically disappear as skin becomes smoother and more even-toned.
  • I have eczema. Is the BIOEFFECT EGF Serum suitable for me?
  • Although there have been no specific trials on sufferers of eczema or other difficult skin conditions, BIOEFFECT EGF Serum's commitment to purity means that many such users are rewarded with very positive results.
  • I have recently been diagnosed with a skin disease. Can I still use the BIOEFFECT EGF Serum?
  • There are an extensive number of preclinical and clinical studies demonstrating that the EGF cellular activator does not induce genotoxicity, mutagenicity or cytotoxicity. Due to the general cellular activating properties of EGF we recommend that people who have, or have had, a medical history of skin diseases or other diseases that could potentially effect the skin, should consult their physician before using any "active" skin care product.
  • Can I use BIOEFFECT EGF Serum during the day?
  • Yes, many users actually prefer to apply the serum on clean skin in the morning and some use it both day and night. It is advisable not to apply make-up or any other product within 20 minutes of using BIOEFFECT EGF Serum, as it might interfere with the activity of the EGF cellular activator. The serum does not contain any sun protection so we recommend use of a seperate sunscreen to protect from harmful UVA.
  • Where can I buy BIOEFFECT EGF Serum?
  • BIOEFFECT EGF Serum is available in most countries, either through retail or online. Refer to our list of distributors to find the BIOEFFECT distributor most convenient for you.

On production technology and science ...

  • How is EGF produced in barley?
  • The Orfeus™ system developed by ORF Genetics uses seeds of the barley plant as mini-factories for cellular activators. Synthetic genes encoding human-like cellular activators are placed into the barley, leading to the formation of a new strai. This barley is identical to other barley except that it produces this new particular protein in its seeds. After harvesting the seeds, the cellular activators are extracted and precise quality assurance testing is performed. This method results in production of purer and more active EGF than has previously been available in cosmetics.
  • How are cellular activators in BIOEFFECT different from other cellular activators?
  • The cellular activators in the BIOEFFECT products - produced with the Orfeus™ system by ORF Genetics - are unlike all other growth factors on the market. This revolutionary technique is a plant system in which proteins are produced in the seeds of barley plants. To date, all other companies that use cellular activators in their skin care products use proteins produced in bacteria (E. coli), hamster cells or yeast. Production of EGF in barley ensures it is void of bacterial endotoxins, human infectious agents and other potential contaminations associated with EGF production in conventional production hosts. By producing the EGF cellular activator in plants, it is possible to achieve an unparalleled level of purity and activity.
  • Is there a connection between EGF and cancer?
  • There is no indication that EGF causes abnormal cell proliferation. EGf and related cellular activators are considered completely safe in the concentration used in skin care products.

There is an extensive battery of preclinical studies documenting that EGF does not induce genotoxicity, mutagenicity or cytotoxicity. No studies have linked EGF with malignant cell transformation leading to cancer. An overly active receptor for EGF is sometimes seen on the surface of tumour cells. When the receptor becomes overly active, it most often has become  independent of EGF regulated signalling. There is no evidence indicating that EGF causes over-expression or mutations of the receptor.

  • Are there are other cellular activators that could be put into skin care products?
  • Yes, more than 20 cellular activators have been associated with skin care products and cellular activators could possibly be used to combat hair loss and various skin problems. We are committed to continue research in these areas.
  • Is there genetically modified barley in the serum?
  • Yes. Innovative genetic engineering that ORF Genetics has developed is the key to production of the EGF cellular activator. This revolutionary new system means sustainable, safe production with optimum efficacy to place in skin care products. A patent pending genetic technology is used to produce the EGF cellular activator within barley seeds. Other manufacturers obtain their cellular activators from genetically modified bacteria (E. coli), hamster cells, yeast or animal cells that may contain by-products generally considered undesirable in cosmetic products.
  • Is BIOEFFECT EGF Serum “organic?“
  • The BIOEFFECT EGF Serum is scientifically developed, responsibly manufactured and contains only pure and safe ingredients. No preservatives, fragrances or colourants are added to the serum. ORF Genetics produces the active ingredient, EGF cellular activator, in genetically modified barley in a green production system in Iceland. The serum is therefore a very pure and organic skin care product, however since genetic engineering and science form the foundation for the serum's production, it cannot by classified and certified  "organic".
  • Is it safe to use skin care products with ingredients made in genetically modified plants?
  • Yes. Proteins that are produced in genetically modified organisms are just like other proteins. The EGF cellular activator is natural to the human body and produced within every skin cell.
  • Is nanotechnology used in the production of the BIOEFFECT EGF Serum?
  • No. Nanotechnology is not used in the production of the BIOEFFECT EGF Serum. The cellular activators are large molecules that do not enter the bloodstream when applied topically to skin. The cosmetic industry mainly utilises nanotechnology for sun block products.
